Season Outlook
Most people around the province think that the 2013-2014 Crusaders are in a “rebuilding” mode with the lost of seven seniors from last year’s team that qualified for the Finals at Harbour Station last season. But in true KVHS fashion we don’t rebuild…we simply reload and prepare for another championship run.
This season the Crusaders will have a much younger team that includes eight players with no varsity experience. But this group is far from inexperienced as eight of the twelve players on the roster have played on a BNB provincial team while three others recently represented New Brunswick at the Canada Games in other sports.
The young guys on the roster will get their varsity introduction very early in the season as the Crusader will attend four high profile tournaments in the first five weeks of the season; Lions Den (Leo Hayes), Cobequid Tip-Off (Truro, NS), CP Allen Cheetah Classic (Bedford, NS) and Rick Cotter Classic (Fredericton High). We’ll round out our exhibition schedule by hosting the annual Riverboat Tournament and attending the Dairy Town Classic in Sussex.
The 2013-2014 Crusaders will look to Brad Sanford and and Ethan O’Neil to led the team through the early part of the schedule. Both are returning starters from last season’s NBIAA Final 12 finalist and both were major contributors to New Brunswick’s top 4 finish at the 2013 Canada Games.
Season Summary
The 2013-2014 Crusaders will be consider the team that “could have been”. From opening day through to the end of the season we had to deal with injuries to key players for significant portions of the schedule.
Even with players rotating in and out of the line up throughout the season the Crusaders continued to rack up the wins against the best teams on the East Coast. The team reached the finals of the Lions Den and Cobequid tournaments and won the 28th Riverboat Classic. During the month of January 2014 the team went on a nine game winning streak that had them getting a honorable mention on North Pole Hoops Top 25 Teams in Canada.
This season also marked a milestone for senior guard Brad Sanford who scored his 1000th career point with the assist coming from co-captain Peter Davis. In typical Peter fashion, it was a no look pass! Brad was also named a NBIAA All Star for the Southern Conference.
KVHS Varsity Boys finished the season with a 25-15 overall record and 2nd place in the Southern Conference with a 8-2 record.
