It’s interesting to see some of the early scores coming in from around the province especially from games involving the preseason favorites like Riverview, St. Macs, Dalhousie, Tantramar, Woodstock and Fredericton.
Like many people, I think Saint Malachy’s has a great shot at returning to the Aitken Center again this year. They have a very strong front court that has both size and experience that inlcudes Simon Marr (6’8″) and Jared Mabee (6’6″) who both played on the BNB U17 team this summer plus they have Alex Marr (6’3″), Kevin Wilson (6’5″) and Jamie Button (6’2″). The big question with this team however, is who will step up for them in their back court. Looking at the results of their opening game lost to Riverview (93-68) it looks like those questions haven’t been answered yet. Not to put too much emphasis on earlier exhibitions games, but it will be interesting to see how St. Macs does this weekend in the Leo Hayes tournament where they will meet KVHS and Woodstock.
Speaking of Woodstock, I’m hearing they knocked off Fredericton High in front of a packed gym at Woodstock High. To be honest this shouldn’t be a surprise as Woodstock has a strong core group of about seven players that are as good as anyone in the province, regardless of division. This isn’t quit the same as Grand Manan beating FHS a couple of seasons ago, but it will definitely create some interesting debates for the remainder of the season.
The big question is…Is WHS that good or is this an off year for Freddy?
Another great game played this weekend was Dalhousie beating Tantramar by seven in the final of the Phantoms Invitational tournament played at Dalhousie Regional High School. This will be an important match-up to watch this year as these teams will battle it out for first place in the AA North/East which means they not only host a regional but presumably avoid a trip to Woodstock who are the favorite to win the South/West.
