It was a jam-packed gym at KVHS for the 20th Annual Rip Seely Memorial Game. And for the 1st time in 20 years, the Rothesay High Red Hawks swept both games.

In the opening game, the KVHS men struggled to get anything going to the rim as RHS played a lane-clogging 2-3 zone forcing the Crusaders into long contested jumpers. The home team was able to keep it close, however, with solid defense and rebounding, holding the two Rothesay big men to just two points combined in the first half.

RHS led 25-17 at the half

The Crusaders found their scoring touch in the 3rd forcing RHS to switch to man-to-man but RHS countered by pounding the ball inside to their two big men. In the 2nd half, Thomas MacDonald and Mike Armstrong combined for 20 of the teams 34 points.

RHS wins 61-46.

The second game was a typically Rip Seely lady’s game. Neither team was able to make separation resulting in another exciting game that was in doubt until the final minutes.

The Crusaders took the early advantage jumping out to a 1st quarter lead of 18-12. The Red Hawks answered that by winning the 2nd quarter 17-11, resulting in the two teams being deadlocked at 29 after 20 minutes.

In the 3rd quarter RHS came out firing and it looked like they were going to run away with it. But once again, KVHS had the answer and was able to cut the Red Hawk lead to 5 points heading into the final quarter (50-45). In the 4th quarter, RHS continued to hit big shots when needed while the Crusader’s offense stalled, only scoring 5 points over the last 10 minutes.

RHS completes the sweep of the 2018 Rip Seely Memorial with a 67-52 victory.
